Chihuly: The Nature of Glass
Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, Arizona
Updated with new photos May 24, 2009
The
outdoor installation of glass sculptures at the Desert Botanical
Garden is a must see, in person. Photographs of the
inspiring designs don't tell the entire story of Dale Chihuly's
remarkable work. Chihuly, born in 1941, is an outstanding artist
and probably the most influential artist in the area of blown
glass.

After landing and entering Chile in Santiago, we
sailed South from Valparaiso on the Star Princess.
Ports or Stops were: Puerto Montt, Pio XI
Glacier, Punta Arenas, Ushuaia (Tierra del Fuego), Cape Horn,
Falkland Islands, and Montevideo. Then we disembarked the
ship at Buenos Aires.

San Francisco Carousel at Pier 39. |
San Francisco
at Night
San Francisco (12 photos)
On a
trip to San Francisco, I was able to go to the pier at sunset.
There was a cloud/fog cover so the sunset was not visible.
I stayed in the area for a couple of hours shooting well after
the light had gone. All of these photos were shot in very
dim light or in darkness using my tripod, time exposures and
flash. Glad I took a
coat! The wind off the water was COLD! |

Sunset over the North Rim, Grand Canyon |
North
Rim Grand Canyon
"The Road Less Traveled"
North Rim
(12 photos)
The remoteness of the
North Rim of the Grand Canyon makes it a special place. Only about 10-18 miles
separate the North and South Rims as the crow flies. There are
two ways to get to the North Rim from the South Rim. Hike down
and back out for a total of 23 miles or drive the 215 miles that
separate the two rims. Significantly fewer people visit the
North Rim which is open only 6 months of the year due to snow
fall at the 8500+ foot elevation. The North Rim receives more
precipitation and is cooler than the South Rim. While on the
road from Jacob Lake, we saw more than a dozen wild turkeys and
numerous deer.
Many of the important
rock formations in the canyon are on the North side of the
Colorado River, making them more prominent when seen from the
North Rim. For all these reasons, the North Rim of the
Grand Canyon is our preferred destination.

Calving of Margerie Glacier in Alaska |
Glacier Bay National
Park
Margerie Glacier is one of the most beautiful
glaciers in the park. It is about one mile wide, with an
ice face 250 feet above the water and 100 feet below the water
surface. The glacier is over 20 miles long and moves down
hill about 2000 feet per year or about 6 feet per day. As
it nears the salt water of the ocean, it breaks off which is
called calving. We were very lucky to see several calvings
during our visit which usually start with a big crack or bang.

Monarch Butterfly Collection

Monarch
Butterflies-Winged Beauty
This is a series of 32 photos of Monarch butterflies showing the
first morning light as the Monarch's awake to their graceful flight and survival.
Butterflies have a relatively short life span. Some species take
several generations to complete a migration. The photos in this
series were taken over a six week period and required more than
30 hours of on-site photography at the butterfly pavilion.
Over 1700 photos were taken of these fast moving beauties to
obtain the ones shown here.
